Day Book in TallyPrime: Review Daily Entries Faster

How to open the Day Book in TallyPrime, change its period and voucher type, filter it, and use it for a ten-minute daily review of your entries.

The Day Book in TallyPrime lists every voucher entered for a date or period: sales, purchases, payments, receipts, journals and more, in one place. It is the fastest way to answer "what did we enter today?" and the best starting point for a daily review. This guide shows how to open and adjust the Day Book, and how to turn it into a ten-minute routine that catches mistakes before they reach your GST returns.

How to open the Day Book in TallyPrime

Press Alt+G (Go To), type Day Book and press Enter. By default, the Day Book shows the last date on which a regular voucher was entered, so on a busy day it opens straight on today's entries.

Change the period, voucher type and view

KeyWhat it does in the Day Book
F2Change the period, for example a full week or month
F4Show only one voucher type, such as Sales or Payment
Ctrl+FApply a filter, for example one party or one ledger
Ctrl+HChange the view of the report
EnterOpen the selected voucher

From the Day Book you can also act on a selected voucher: Alt+2 duplicates it, Alt+D deletes it and Alt+X cancels it, if your user role allows. Our list of TallyPrime shortcut keys has the rest.

A ten-minute daily review routine

Most errors are cheapest to fix on the day they happen. A short review each evening catches them early:

  1. Open today's Day Book and scan the count of vouchers. Is it roughly what you expect for the day?
  2. Check sales (F4 > Sales). Party names, invoice numbers in sequence, and no unusually large or small amounts.
  3. Check payments and receipts. Right bank or cash ledger, cheque or reference details filled in.
  4. Look at journals carefully. They are where unusual adjustments live. Each one should have a clear narration.
  5. Open anything that looks odd and correct it now, while the person who entered it still remembers why.

Day Book, edit log and user rights

The Day Book shows what exists now. If you need to know who created or changed an entry and when, that is the job of the edit log, explained in our guide to Edit Log and the audit trail rule. And if the review keeps finding deleted or altered entries, tighten who can do that with user rights in TallyPrime.

When the standard Day Book is not enough

The standard Day Book is a list. Some owners want a summary instead, such as totals per voucher type per day, or extra details such as who entered each voucher. AndurilTech lists Day Book add-ons including Columnar Day Book Summary, Entry Details in Day Book and a Day Book Dashboard. Read each product page for what it shows and the release it supports, then load it using our TDL installation guide.
