How to Install a TDL File in TallyPrime (Step-by-Step Guide)

A step-by-step guide to loading a TDL add-on in TallyPrime, checking that it loaded, setting it up on multi-user systems, and fixing a TDL that won't load.

To install a TDL in TallyPrime, keep the add-on file in a permanent folder, open TDL Management with Ctrl+Alt+T (or F1: Help > TDL & Add-On), press F4: Manage Local TDLs, set Load selected TDL files on startup to Yes, add the file's path and press Ctrl+A to accept. The TDL then appears in the TDL Management report, where you can confirm that it loaded.

This guide covers each step in detail, the difference between .tcp and .tdl files, installing on multi-user and cloud setups, and what to check when a TDL will not load. Menu names follow Tally Solutions' official guide to deploying TDLs and add-ons. Labels can differ slightly between TallyPrime releases, so follow the closest match on your screen.

What you need before installing a TDL in TallyPrime

  • The add-on file. Ready-made add-ons are usually supplied as a compiled .tcp file, and source-code TDLs come as .tdl or .txt. If your download is a .zip archive, extract it first: TallyPrime loads the file inside the archive, not the archive itself.
  • Your TallyPrime release. Check it under F1: Help > About and compare it with the release the add-on supports.
  • A fresh backup. A TDL changes how TallyPrime screens, reports or prints behave, and some add-ons create or modify entries. Back up your company data before loading anything new on live books. If backups are not automatic yet, see how to set up automatic backups in TallyPrime.
  • Access to the folder. The Windows user who runs TallyPrime must be able to read the folder where you keep the TDL.

If you bought an add-on from AndurilTech, the TDL file is available to download from your customer dashboard right after payment.

TCP vs TDL: which file do you have?

File typeWhat it isCan you edit it?Typical use
.tcpTally Compliant Product: a compiled TDL built with TallyPrime DeveloperNoReady-made add-ons supplied to customers
.tdl / .txtPlain-text TDL source codeYes, in a text editor or TallyPrime DeveloperSource-code products, custom development and testing

Both types are loaded through the same screen, so the steps below apply to either. Some products in the AndurilTech catalogue are sold as source code, for example the TDL source code for changing the print position of bank details with a UPI QR code, and that listing names the TallyPrime release it was built for. If you edit a source-code TDL, keep an untouched copy of the original so you can go back to it.

One more detail matters for .tcp files. TallyPrime Developer can build a TCP that works only on specified TallyPrime serial numbers, and an add-on built that way will load only on the licence it was made for. If you plan to move an add-on to another licence, ask the seller first. AndurilTech's checkout includes an optional field for your TallyPrime serial number, which is used for licence support.

How to install a TDL in TallyPrime: step by step

Step 1: Save the TDL file in a permanent folder

TallyPrime reads a local TDL from the path you give it every time it starts. If the file sits in Downloads or on the Desktop and is later moved, renamed or cleaned up, the add-on stops loading. Create one folder for all your add-ons, for example C:\TallyPrime\TDL\, copy the file there, and do not rename it after you add it to TallyPrime.

Step 2: Open the TDL Management report

Press Ctrl+Alt+T from anywhere in TallyPrime, or go to F1: Help > TDL & Add-On. The same section is also reachable from F1: Help > About. The report shows how many TDLs are configured and loaded, split into local TDLs (set up on this computer) and account TDLs (configured for your Tally licence account).

Step 3: Press F4 to manage local TDLs

Press F4: Manage Local TDLs. The TDL Configuration screen opens.

Step 4: Set "Load selected TDL files on startup" to Yes

This tells TallyPrime to load the TDLs listed on this screen whenever it starts, so you do not have to repeat the installation each day.

Step 5: Add the path of the TDL file

In the list of files, use one of two options:

  • Select from Drive: browse to your TDL folder and pick the file.
  • Specify Path: type the full path including the extension, for example C:\TallyPrime\TDL\YourAddon.tcp.

Browsing to the file avoids typing mistakes in the path.

Step 6: Accept and confirm that the TDL loaded

Press Ctrl+A to accept. Back on the TDL Management report, check that your file is listed and shown as loaded. Then open the screen where the add-on is meant to work, such as a report, a voucher entry screen or an invoice print, and confirm the new option is there. If the TDL is listed but the feature does not appear, restart TallyPrime once and check again before you start troubleshooting.

Where an AndurilTech product page includes installation steps under "Setup, compatibility and delivery", follow those too. They cover settings specific to that add-on.

Installing a TDL on multi-user, network and cloud setups

A local TDL is configured per TallyPrime installation. In a multi-user office, which is the setup TallyPrime Gold is meant for (see TallyPrime Silver vs Gold), loading an add-on on one computer does not make it appear on the others.

  • Repeat the steps on each computer that needs the add-on. Point every machine to a copy of the file in a local folder, or to a shared folder that is always reachable when TallyPrime starts.
  • Keep every computer on the same TallyPrime release so the add-on behaves the same way for every user.
  • Consider account TDLs for larger setups. Account TDLs are configured against your Tally licence account rather than a single computer, and the TDL Management report lists them separately. Ask your Tally administrator or partner whether that suits your office.

If TallyPrime runs on a remote or cloud server, install the TDL on the server where TallyPrime actually runs, not on the laptop you connect from. Our guide to cloud Tally and remote access explains the common hosting setups.

Note for IT administrators: Tally's documentation also describes loading a TCP by editing the tally.ini file in the TallyPrime installation folder, setting User TDL to Yes and adding a TDL line with the file name. That route suits scripted deployment across many machines. For a single computer, the F4 screen is simpler and easier to undo.

TDL not loading in TallyPrime? What to check

What you seeLikely causeWhat to do
The TDL is listed in TDL Management but not loadedThe path is wrong, or the file was moved, renamed or deletedOpen F4: Manage Local TDLs and re-select the file with Select from Drive

It loads, but the feature is missing or shows errorsA release mismatch, or another TDL changes the same report or printCheck the supported release, then temporarily remove other TDLs to find a conflict
It stopped working after a TallyPrime updateThe add-on may need a build for the new releaseContact the developer with your new release number

When you ask for help, share the add-on name, your TallyPrime release from F1: Help > About, and a screenshot of the TDL Management report. Those three details make an installation problem much faster to diagnose.

How to remove or disable a TDL in TallyPrime

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open TDL Management.
  2. Press F4: Manage Local TDLs.
  3. Clear the add-on's entry from the list of files.
  4. Press Ctrl+A to accept, and confirm that the TDL no longer appears in the report.

Delete or archive the file only after you have removed it from the list. Deleting it first leaves an entry that points to a file that no longer exists.

Ready-made add-on or custom TDL?

Installation works the same way whether you buy a ready-made add-on or commission custom development. The bigger decision is which one fits your workflow. Browse ready-made TDL add-ons for TallyPrime when a listed feature matches what you need. If your report, print format or process is specific to your business, compare a ready-made add-on with a custom TDL before you decide.

For projects built through AndurilTech's Tally customization services, the build is checked on your data and then installed in your Tally with a handover, so you do not have to run these steps yourself. If you are stuck installing an add-on you bought, contact the AndurilTech team with the product name and your TallyPrime release.

Summary: installing a TDL in TallyPrime

Installing a TDL in TallyPrime takes a few minutes. Keep the file in a permanent folder, open TDL Management with Ctrl+Alt+T, press F4, set Load selected TDL files on startup to Yes, add the file and accept with Ctrl+A. Then confirm the TDL shows as loaded, repeat the steps on every computer that needs the add-on, and take a backup before you load anything new on live data.

Frequently asked questions

What is the shortcut key to open TDL Management in TallyPrime?

Press Ctrl+Alt+T from anywhere in TallyPrime, or go to F1: Help > TDL & Add-On. From the TDL Management report, press F4 to manage local TDLs.

Can TallyPrime load a .tdl file as well as a .tcp file?

Yes. Both are added through F4: Manage Local TDLs. A .tcp file is a compiled add-on that cannot be edited, while a .tdl or .txt file is readable TDL source code.

Do I need to install the TDL on every computer in a multi-user setup?

For local TDLs, yes. They are configured per TallyPrime installation, so load the add-on on each computer that needs it, or ask your Tally administrator about configuring it as an account TDL.

Why did my TDL stop loading after I moved the file?

TallyPrime loads a local TDL from the path saved in F4: Manage Local TDLs. If the file is moved or renamed, that path no longer works. Re-select the file from its new location and accept with Ctrl+A.

Will installing a TDL change my existing accounting data?

It depends on the add-on. A TDL that adds a report or changes a print format reads your data, while one that adds fields, imports entries or automates vouchers can write to it. Take a backup first, and test add-ons that create or change entries on a copy of your company.
