The Sales Register in TallyPrime answers the first question every owner asks: how are sales going? It shows sales month by month, lets you drill down to the individual invoices, and can estimate gross profit. This guide covers how to open and read it, and a short monthly routine that turns it into decisions.

How to open the Sales Register

Go to Gateway of Tally > Display More Reports > Account Books > Sales Register, or press Alt+G and type "Sales Register". It opens as a monthly summary showing each month's sales total.

Tally's guide to working with the Sales Register in TallyPrime covers periodic and comparison views in more detail.

What to look for each month

  • Trend: is this month above or below the same month last year, not just last month? Seasonal businesses must compare like with like.
  • Margin: is gross profit holding up, or are discounts eating it?
  • Mix: which customers and items drove the change? Drill down to find out.
  • Oddities: very large or very small invoices, and credit notes, which reduce net sales.

A 15-minute monthly sales review

  1. Open the Sales Register for the financial year to date.
  2. Compare this month with the same month last year.
  3. Press F7 to check estimated profit. Investigate any month where margin drops.
  4. Drill into the month and sort by amount to see the biggest invoices.
  5. Cross-check customers who usually buy but did not, using our guide to finding customers who stopped buying.

Cash, counter and daily figures

The Sales Register is a monthly view. For daily control, especially at a counter, use the daily cash review in our guide to cash sales in TallyPrime, and the Day Book for a complete list of the day's entries.

When you need a different layout

Some businesses want sales by month in columns, for example one column per month or per voucher type, to compare at a glance or share with a bank. AndurilTech lists a Columnar Monthly Summary add-on; check its product page for the exact layout and supported release.
